What is Myotherapy

Myotherapy is a branch of manual medicine which focuses on the comprehensive assessment, treatment and management of musculoskeletal pain.

This involves an extensive physical evaluation and an integrated therapeutic approach to connective tissue (muscles, joints, nerves and fascia). Treatment is then applied to remedy acute or chronic conditions and prevent them from reoccurring. Myotherapy has a high range of success for most common musculoskeletal conditions that result from improper posture, poor biomechanics and injury. A Myotherapist can assess and treat the connective tissue using mostly direct ‘hands-on’ techniques.

What to expect during Myotherapy consultation

During Myotherapy consult we are determined to find the cause of the pain. Problematic areas are often discovered using the following assessment methods:

  • A thorough patient history
  • Observations of spinal and peripheral movement and gait
  • Postural observations and assessment
  • Palpation of musculature, connective tissue and joint function
  • Clinical orthopaedic and neurological testing

Myotherapy plays an important role in manual medicine as a single mode of treatment or used in conjunction with treatment provided by both medical and other allied health practitioners. Myotherapy is complementary to Osteopathy, Pilates, Physiotherapy, Chiropractic, Podiatry and Acupuncture. High level outcomes are achieved faster with a multi-disciplinary approach.
